Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants in LA List is Delicious
The Los Angeles Times asked us to design the visual identity for their annual 101 Best Restaurants list curated by restaurant critic Bill Addison. This year’s theme was “The Art of Food” which celebrates chefs as artists and focuses on their craft. We wanted to echo the idea of artistry and imagination through playful typography, icons and graphics and carry that theme through all print and digital materials and the live event itself.
The 101 Best List can be viewed as an interactive microsite on the LA Times website, as well as a print magazine with three different covers arriving in that Sunday’s paper.
Icons of a cocktail, fork, knife and spoon in the same Messymod illustration style were used for signage at the food event. And as a little surprise, they distinguish each of the 3 magazine cover spines.

We were commissioned to create illustrations for HBR’s May/June 2022 issue. The article is titled Designing Work That People Love which talks about how companies can attract and retain employees by designing work and a workplace that employees truly enjoy. The illustrations are based on cooperation observed in nature – bee hives, army ants and schooling fish.

Road & Track celebrates music’s love affair with cars with their first music issue
Hearst Magazines contacted us to create illustrations for Road & Track’s first-ever Music Issue celebrating 100 years of music and cars. Unique numbers 1, 2, 3 were created to introduce each section of the magazine. It was an honor to be a part of this special issue filled with the cars and music we have grown up with.
The Dramatist is a publication devoted to the business and craft of writing for theatre
For an article about the origin of ideas and copyrights, we created an original illustration plays on “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?” This is, of course, the classic metaphor describing situations where it’s not clear which of two events should be considered the cause. Our popular messymod letters were also licensed for use as initial caps throughout the magazine.
For the Dramatist’s Environmental Issue, we created a cover and inside editorial illustrations utilizing our flora, insects and scenic pieces to help depict ideas around environmental theater and arts.
